Los Angeles Waste Rules for Dumpster Rentals

Los Angeles waste rules depend on your project address, the materials you discard and where you place the bin. Before a cleanout or renovation, confirm placement requirements, keep prohibited items out of the load and plan how construction debris will be recycled.

Clearing a home in Silver Lake, remodeling in Hollywood or planning a project in Northridge? Nu-Way Bin Rentals & Roll Off Service can help you choose a container for your materials and available space. Explore our Los Angeles dumpster rentals or call or text (626) 840-6300 with your address and project details.

Start with the rules for your project address

A Los Angeles mailing address does not always identify the agency responsible for waste service or street permits. Confirm whether the property is in the City of Los Angeles, an unincorporated County area or a separate incorporated city.

Project location

Where to confirm requirements

City of Los Angeles

LA Sanitation and Environment for waste hauling; StreetsLA for public street placement; LADBS for building permit requirements.

Unincorporated Los Angeles County

LA County Public Works for County waste, road and construction debris requirements.

Separate cities such as Pasadena, Pomona or Long Beach

That city’s public works, waste services and building departments.

For an apartment, commercial property or managed development, also confirm which provider is authorized for your property type and waste stream. Ask about any franchise, property management or association requirements before ordering a bin.

Los Angeles dumpster permits and placement

Planning to put a dumpster on a public street, in an alley or within another public right-of-way? Contact StreetsLA permit services before delivery to confirm the required permit, approved location and placement conditions. Align the delivery and pickup dates with the authorization.

A dumpster placed entirely on private property usually avoids a street-use permit, but property permission and safe access still matter. Check the boundary if the proposed location includes a driveway apron or sidewalk. Nu-Way’s dumpster rental FAQs explain the general difference between private-property and street placement.

  • Leave enough room for the delivery truck, container door and pickup access.
  • Keep pedestrian routes, neighboring driveways, hydrants and storm drains clear.
  • Confirm parking restrictions and whether separate no-parking arrangements are needed.
  • Tell us about low wires, overhanging branches, narrow gates or sloped driveways before delivery.

What can go in a dumpster in Los Angeles

Give us a complete material list when you request a quote. A material may be accepted for one type of load and need a separate container or recycling arrangement for another. Our accepted-material guidance covers common cleanout and construction waste.

Material

Plan before loading

Household junk and furniture

Confirm the items and volume; set electronics and special-handling items aside.

Untreated wood, drywall and other nonhazardous remodeling debris

Identify the project as construction or demolition waste and confirm the recycling destination.

Clean concrete, brick and dirt

Ask for a suitable heavy-debris container and confirm which materials may be combined.

Branches, leaves and other yard debris

Ask about a separate green-waste load and keep contaminants out.

Mattresses and box springs

Arrange mattress recycling separately before adding them to any load.

For concrete or soil removal, discuss the material with us before choosing a roll-off dumpster. A container can reach its safe weight limit while there is still visible space inside.

Items that need separate disposal

Nu-Way’s published roll-off restrictions exclude paint, chemicals, batteries, tires, treated wood, oil and light bulbs. Set these aside when sorting a garage, shed or renovation site.

Also keep electronic waste, propane cylinders and asbestos-containing materials out of a standard debris load. California’s waste disposal guidance identifies these materials as requiring special handling. If older building materials may contain asbestos, arrange a qualified assessment before disturbing or loading them.

Check all appliances with us before loading. Refrigerators and air conditioners need arrangements for refrigerants and other regulated components. For beds, ask about our dedicated mattress recycling service.

Where LA residents can take household hazardous waste

Eligible household hazardous waste and electronics can be taken to designated County collection events or City of Los Angeles S.A.F.E. Centers. Check the official collection-center directory for accepted items, operating dates and transport limits before traveling.

The free household collection program is for residents. Businesses should arrange commercial hazardous-waste disposal or check eligibility for a separate small-business program. Keep chemicals in their original labeled containers when possible and never mix products.

Construction debris recycling rules in Los Angeles

Use the correct processor for City of Los Angeles debris

LA Sanitation’s Waste Hauler Compliance Program requires mixed construction and demolition materials to go directly to City-certified processors. Confirm the receiving facility before hauling begins and ask which weight tickets or recycling records will be available for your project.

Nu-Way Bin Rentals appears on the City’s permitted waste hauler list under permit PER-09-017, verified September 15, 2026. Waste-hauler authorization and permission to place a bin on a public street are separate requirements.

Confirm the recycling target for your permit

California’s CALGreen standards establish a minimum 65% diversion requirement for covered projects, with specified compliance methods. Check your project’s scope and local permit conditions; local requirements can be stricter. See CalRecycle’s construction waste requirements summary.

For unincorporated Los Angeles County projects, use the County’s separate construction and demolition recycling program. Its posted ordinance update, effective August 19, 2024, lists a 70% recycling target for mixed construction debris and separate soil requirements. Confirm the applicable target and deposit with the County C&D Unit and your approved Recycle Reuse Plan before hauling.

County projects subject to this process need a Recycle Reuse Plan before work and a Final Compliance Report afterward. Keep every weight ticket and verify the approved receiving facilities. A paid dumpster invoice alone may not provide the project-level recycling evidence your permitting agency needs.

Plan separate material streams early when practical. Keeping clean concrete, soil and recyclable materials free of general trash can preserve more disposal and recycling options. Ask about recycling services in Los Angeles when you describe the job.

Food scraps and yard waste need the right collection stream

California’s SB 1383 rules require participation in local organics programs, subject to applicable exemptions and approved alternatives. Follow your property’s collection instructions for food scraps and yard trimmings. CalRecycle explains the collection requirements.

For routine collection, follow the labels on your recycling, organics and trash containers. LA County’s green-bin guidance includes food scraps, accepted food-soiled paper and yard trimmings.

Plastics, glass and pet waste belong outside the organics stream.

A temporary construction dumpster has its own agreed material list. Check with Nu-Way before adding food waste, landscaping debris or soil to a mixed load. For a larger yard cleanup, describe the branches, plants and soil separately so we can discuss the appropriate arrangement.

Choose a bin for both volume and weight

The right container depends on the debris, access and amount of material. Start with these options, then confirm the size, allowed load and rental terms with our team.

Container

Typical project

3-yard bin

A small household or garage cleanout.

10-yard lowboy

Approved heavy debris such as concrete, brick or dirt.

20-yard roll-off

A renovation or medium-sized cleanout.

40-yard roll-off

A large construction project or bulky debris load.

Compare our 3-yard bins and roll-off options. Confirm the included weight allowance and loading instructions for your specific rental. Keep material within the designated fill level and contact us about an exchange if you need more capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions About LA Waste Rules

Have questions about dumpster placement and waste disposal in Los Angeles? Call or text (626) 840-6300 for help with your project.

```
Can I Put a Dumpster in Front of My House
Confirm where the property boundary ends. A bin entirely on your private driveway usually has different requirements from one occupying the street or public sidewalk. For public placement in the City of Los Angeles, check with StreetsLA before scheduling delivery.
Can I Mix Concrete and Household Junk
Ask before loading. Combining household junk with a clean concrete load changes the material stream and can affect recycling, weight, and pricing. Describe both materials when you request a quote.
Can Treated Fence Boards Go in a Rental Dumpster
Treated wood is excluded from Nu-Way's standard roll-off loads. Keep it separate and arrange an appropriate disposal option. If you are unsure whether the wood was treated, check before loading it.
Can I Use Household Hazardous Waste Events for Business Waste
The free household events do not accept business-generated hazardous waste. A business should use an authorized commercial service or check whether it qualifies for a separate small-business collection program.
